Singing with the Accidentals

During my time at the University of Georgia, I joined a singing group called the UGA Accidentals. Founded in 1974, the Accidentals is the oldest all-male a cappella group at the University of Georgia. A close brotherhood of 15 young men, the group rehearses several times a week and performing an eclectic mix of various popular genres several times a month, live without accompaniment. A staple of the Athens community, the Accidentals have become well-renowned for delivering audiences with solid, energetic performances throughout the year, as well as consistently putting out quality albums every other year.

More recently, the group has found success in the a cappella competition circuit, regularly placing in singing competitions up and down the East coast. In my time with the Accidentals, I’ve had the opportunity to compete in several national-level a cappella competitions, SoJam and ICCA’s (We made 3rd place at Finals round this past year in New York City), in addition to recording two full-length albums (Imprint and our Christmas CD).

I sang baritone and bass, in addition to doing vocal percussion. I also had the esteemed honor to serve as the group’s Public Relations Chair, a position that allowed me to improve the Accidentals’ visibility in the greater Athens community, by involving the group in SpringSing Weekend and maintaining social media brand awareness campaigns.

SPRINGSING: Voices United for a Cure

The Team Burns Charitable Foundation is a non-profit organization founded two years ago in memory of my father, Ted Burns, a victim of colon cancer. We raise money for cancer research and awareness programs, donating to the American Cancer Society (ACS), and hosting annual fundraisers such as SpringSing: Voices United for a Cure, a multi-day a cappella music festival for charity. To date, we’ve raised more than $15,000 for cancer research.

It highlights some of my experiences with planning SpringSing, our largest annual fundraiser. Also make sure to visit the “My Charity” tab on the top of this page to learn more.
