Singing

UGA Accidentals

story_accidentals_020The UGA Accidentals are the oldest all-male a cappella group at the University of Georgia. We are a brotherhood of 15 guys that like to sing without accompaniment. We practice several times a week, and give live performances in and around Georgia just as much as we practice. Singing with the group balances out my hectic school and work schedule, and gives me great enjoyment.

In my time with the Accidentals, I have competed in two national a cappella competitions, Sojam, and ICCA’s (We made it to semifinals!), and recorded two full-length albums (Imprint and our 2009 Christmas CD). The group stays involved with charitable causes. Last year, the Accidentals co-hosted SpringSing: Voices United for a Cure 2009, Team Burns’ keynote fundraiser for the ACS. This year, the group sang at AIDS Walk/Run Athens, Zeta Tau Alpha Sorority’s “BrAcappella” for breast cancer awareness, and will participate again in SpringSing.

Journalism

The Red & Black

C a m p u s  N e w s p a p e r

The Red & Black is the largest student-run daily publication at the University of Georgia. As a staff writer, I have published for various sections of the paper, including features and variety, as well as the Athenscape “Welcome Back” paper. Many of my album reviews have been published as well.

Outside of charity work for the American Cancer Society, I also find time to write. Music and writing are two  big parts of my life. So I figured, why not combine the two and create a blog for it? Check out ThePerfectAlbum for honest, detailed album reviews of music of all genres.

Scholarly Projects

Social Media in the field of Public Relations

R e s e a r c h  P a p e r

In the fall of 2008, I took “Introduction to Public Relations” at UGA, a course dedicated to teaching the various theories and practical application of public relations.

I spent the semester conducting research on the use of social media in public relations.

This past spring, I took a class at the University of Georgia (UGA) entitled “Writing for the World Wide Web,” a semester-long survey of the various rhetorical strategies and techniques associated with social media and blogging. We studied several web platforms, such as Facebook and Twitter, and even used a WordPress blog to discuss topics outside of class.

The culmination of the semester was the collaborative group research paper, entitled “New Media and the Modern Scholar,” a thought-provoking analysis of the relationship between the Internet and academia. For nearly twenty-five pages, we looked at various topics related to new media and scholarship, such as credibility, audience, and visual rhetoric.
